The Man, The Myth, The Legend: John Woo

Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1946, John Woo grew up during a time of great political turmoil. His family split apart when his father moved to Hong Kong to find work, leaving Woo and his mother behind. Despite the difficult circumstances of his childhood, Woo developed a love for film at an early age. He often skipped school to go to the movies, earning him a reputation as a troublemaker.

After high school, Woo was accepted into the prestigious Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he studied film and television. It was there that he met future collaborator Tsui Hark. The two would go on to make some of the most iconic films of the 1980s, including “A Better Tomorrow” and “Once a Thief.” In 1987, Woo directed his first Hollywood film, “Hard Target,” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. He followed that up with such action classics as “Broken Arrow” and “Face/Off.”

These days, Woo is considered one of the masters of the action genre. His films are known for their over-the-top violence and intricate stunt work. He has also popularized slow motion and dual-wielding firearms in action movies. In recent years, he has returned to his roots in Asian cinema with films like “Red Cliff” and “The Crossing.”

John Woo is a true legend in the world of action movies. His films have thrilled audiences around the globe and have inspired countless imitators. If you’re a fan of adrenaline-fueled mayhem, you owe it to yourself to check out some of his work. You won’t be disappointed.
